Tis is how I teach my disciple by ShinRyuShou Tis is how I teach my disciple by ShinRyuShou
My original character, Yukiko the 400 yrs old fox assasin teachin her disciple =p Was experimenting on new Painter's brush nib . As a result , the background only used 4 hours to complete but as for the characters......i spent more than 10 hours on them =.=. Kind of regret of putting too much details on the characters....
Fullview if you want to see what happened to her disciple =P
Side info:
1. To clear doubt regarding why Yukiko looks so young despite being an 400 yrs old obachan . She attained her "spiritship"(somehow it's like became a deity) few hundreds years ago. Being a fox spirit, she will never aged although still vulnerable to deity type physical attack.

Tis is how I teach my disciple by ~ShinRyuShou

The suggester wrote: "It's such a wonderful piece. Beautiful, detailed and funny with a story behind it. The combination of colours is so appealing and the technique used for the colouring is great. The artist really knew how to bring out all the details needed with the right colours and shading. The style is quite different than the usual ones which makes it really unique and adds emotion to the drawing." ( Suggested by KrisiChiki and Featured by Damaged927 )

haha, the expression on disciple's face is classic! thanks for the watch back, and congrats on being one of the finalist for :iconartyamg:'s contest! the way the tiger is drawn is great,i must start learning to draw and colour animals more realistically! i like the background on this piece, as it shows where the two chara leap from, though i think yukiko seems to have overleap XD. since she is a well trained assasin, shouldn't be a problem though! no one ever said characters must land on their respective roofs anyway.

using a new tool usually makes one job easier, another hard, as u aren't used to it. like my new brush colours hair beautifully, but i dunno about the body...

My biggest beef is the design of the character, you claim she was 400 years old? I wouldn't guess more than 14. Nothing about her would show her true age, which by the way, a good character concept artist would integrate or hint at in their image.

yeah but then what's the point of her being 400 rather than 14? What justification do you have that she needs to be 400?

:iconledded:

well, I don't see any reason for it at all, but if I was the artist, I guess my justification would be "I am a closet pedophile." however, I cannot think of a way to make this sound good in the description for a Daily Deviation.

As I said my beef is that the story doesn't fit the character. If the artist let me as a viewer interpet the character as it is, I would have never guessed she was older than what she seemed.

She's a fox spirit which will never grow old. Thats why she looks very young. I don't see why i need to hint anythin regarding her age o.0 I respect your perception of being a good character concept designer, but i have to disagree with you with this opinion.

Disagree with me all you want, but the fact of the matter is, when you take artwork to the professional level, which you absolutely have with skill, position, composition, lighting and all that jazz, you have literaly 10 seconds, no more, for the viewer to understand the character.

It may seem unfair, or idiotic, but those are the relative statistics, as I have been taught, and have seen first hand.

I didn't even know she was a spirit, for that matter. There could have been more creative way or portraying that as well.

What I state isn't much of an opinion, it's just the nature of things. If the basic descriptions and characteristics cannot be portrayed to the village idiot in the first 10 seconds, it's not powerful or clear enough of a character design.

Some suggestions to make it more accurate, perhaps portray a somewhat more mature look on her face, maybe an old wound, suggesting age or maturity far beyond that which is portrayed now. A much more confident and or widened expression, if she's a spirit draw a few whisps or ethereal, nearly magical things around her, it's things to suggest what her background is through the visualization.

Take for example Pai Mei from Kill Bill, without having anyone explain to me what Pai Mei is, or who he was, within the first 5 seconds of seeing the character I knew the following things: He's old, wise looking, therefore I know he must be a sage of some sort, he is also elegantly dressed, and sits in a very ornate terrace, suggesting that he is also highly respected and recognized figure. His demeanor and expression from the very beginning portrayed a sense of superiority and confidence over the protagonist, all within the first five seconds. That is why he is such a powerful character, and is arguably one of the most memorable from Kill Bill Vol 2.

I'm not saying your work is bad, don't treat it as such, I am offering you a suggestion on what you can do to make your piece that much more powerful.

Perhaps you should go read Chinese famous novel like "the legendary condor heroes" , where the main female character never grow old and have the body and facial of a teenage. Then again, i must stress on this , i have my own reason of making her looked very young , i do hope you respect what i try to do with my style .

:iconpoopgoblyn:
Poopgoblyn Featured By Owner Mar 10, 2010
except the legendary condor heroes is not visually portrayed, and if it was, I have no doubt in my mind that the artist who would do it accurately would consider portraying their age in a fashion suited for the character design.

And by the way, there are plenty of myths and stories out there involving various figure heads who are aged much longer than the average person.

On the one hand, I would agree with you, and had I done a character like this myself, I would've done it differently, to be sure. That said, are you taking into account the fact she's an OC? My point there is that her "backstory" has probably already been explained in full through other artworks, meaning that this isn't the crucial "introductory" image that needs to immediately convey her full story.

:iconpoopgoblyn:
Poopgoblyn Featured By Owner Mar 10, 2010
Yes, I am considering the fact that it is an OC...which in essence is actually irrelevant. Entirely irrelevant. Most professional illustration are OCs. And the back story of any character, no matter what the condition is, need to be put into a visualization, or a representation, into the overall design. Otherwise the character is just is, a character that is left for the imagination to interpret. And that is all fine and dandy if he didn't have a back story.

You're missing my point. Sometimes the best OCs are the ones that give no indication whatsoever of their true pasts or stories, until that one big OMG NO WAY moment when the totally unindicated and unexpected truth is revealed.

Then you have to present that sense of mystery, that sense of wonder, and interest. Which he has not done here.

Because it's not... The first... PIECE.

Also, some of the best "mysteries" are the ones that we don't even know are there until they're revealed in full...
